Course Description

This twelve-week surgical clerkship is geared toward developing the fundamental principles of surgery that all students should possess at the time of graduation with an M.D. degree. Basic surgical principles and procedures will be taught, with an emphasis on knowledge of common surgical diseases, operations, communication, and altruism. The course consists of both inpatient and outpatient experiences. The inpatient experience includes the initial assessment of acutely ill patients, observation, and participation in a variety of advanced surgical procedures, ward management of these patients, gynecologic surgery, and exposure to one surgical subspecialty. The outpatient experience includes clinic experience and observation of common surgical procedures that may not require hospital admission.

Course Description

Students will participate at Tampa General Hospital, on Davis Islands in downtown Tampa Florida. During these services, the student is expected to function at the level of an intern. Responsibility will vary with the ability of each student. The elective will afford the students an in-depth experience in total patient management so that these responsibilities may be assumed with confidence in the internship year.

Course Description

This clinical elective affords the students an in-depth experience in total patient management as an acting intern on a trauma surgery service in order to provide exposure to the daily responsibilities that are associated with a trauma surgery intern year. Students may choose to participate in the trauma surgical ICU service or on the trauma and acute care surgery ward under direct supervision of a chief resident. On these services, the student is expected to function as an intern. Students will participate in the care of blunt and penetrating trauma patients, emergency general surgery patients, as well as post-operative elective general surgery patients on the wards, in the operating room, and in the ICU.

Course Description

The AI is a 4-week rotation that will provide you with a continuous experience with vascular surgery residents, fellows and faculty and be treated as a member of the program. Though there may be some variation in your duties, the majority of your time will be spent as a member of the inpatient team for the residency. There are three service teams for vascular surgery, A , B, and C. Each team consists of an intern, a chief or fellow and two to three Attending physicians, with a shared PGY3 consult resident. There is a Vascular ICU resident (PGY2 or 3) and endovascular resident (PGY 2 or 3). The team performs the initial evaluation for patients in conjunction with the emergency department staff, as well as inpatient consults for vascular surgery. The team is responsible for perioperative and postoperative management of service patients, as well as perioperative preparation and recommendations for consult patients undergoing vascular surgery. All members of the team participate in operative interventions as determined by the chief and/or fellow of the service. Vascular surgery is unique in that it affords not only operative experience, but the opportunity to provide longitudinal medical care to patients. Our patients frequently have complex medical comorbidities in addition to their surgical issues.
