Research Focus: Dr. Allen-Gipson research focuses on mechanisms controlling repair of bronchial epithelium and the role of epithelial injury in airway disease. She is particularly interested in studying aspects of adenosine signal pathway in these processes. Adenosine, an endogenous nucleoside has been recognized as an important modulator of hypoxic, ischemic and inflammatory process critical to both tissue homeostasis and tissue injury. Dr. Allen-Gipson recently funded program specifically addressed the role adenosine plays in maintaining airway homeostasis and wounded airway. Most recently Dr. Allen-Gipson is looking at the effects of cigarette smoke on adenosine mediated wound repair. Exposure to cigarette smoke is responsible for a considerable amount of pulmonary diseases including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, carcinoma of the lung, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the mechanisms by which adenosine-mediated airway wound healing and repair occurs after exposure to injurious agents like cigarette smoke has not been investigated. Dr. Allen-Gipson studies will provide novel Adenosine-linked targets, leading toward the development of new therapies directed at chronic inflammatory diseases like asthma and COPD.

QinGyu (Stephanie) Zhou, PhD

Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Education:  Dr. Qingyu (Stephanie) Zhou received her bachelor’s degree in pharmacology from Shanghai Medical University in China. She earned her Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences from the National University of Singapore in 2003. She pursued her postdoctoral studies with Dr. James Gallo at Temple University, where she worked on interactions of cytotoxic and antiangiogenic drugs using different in vivo brain tumor models.

Prior to joining the USF COP, Dr. Zhou was a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Systems Therapeutics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where she worked on the acquired resistance to antiangiogenic drugs in gliomas. Dr. Zhou is a member of American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

Research Focus: Dr. Zhou’s major areas of interest and research expertise are in experimental therapeutics of metastatic tumors and acquired resistance to molecularly targeted cancer therapies. One of Dr. Zhou’s current research programs concerns the development of novel preclinical approaches to guide the use of targeted therapeutic agents for the treatment of brain metastases. The mission begins with the establishment of an in vivo brain metastasis model that possesses the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and is able to replicate the native environment of brain metastases; continues with the characterization of the pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) properties of a targeted therapeutic agent in the established in vivo model; and is followed by quantitative evaluation of the relationship between drug distribution in the target tissue and tumor response to the treatment through the measurement of PD biomarkers representing the specific signaling transduction networks in tumor cells and their microenvironment – with each step working towards building a framework to guide the rational design of drug dosing regimens that lead to optimal tumor drug concentrations and maximal antineoplastic effects. Dr. Zhou’s research also extends to the mechanistic study of acquired resistance to targeted therapy in lung cancers using in vivo drug resistant tumor models. The goal is to provide a means to understand the sequence of biologically programmed events leading to the acquired resistance to the targeted therapy in lung cancers and aid in the rational design of combined targeted therapies with durable antitumor effects.
