Research Overview

Division of Surgical Research

Thank you for your interest in the research programs of the USF Department of Surgery. We thrive to improve surgical practice through rigorous and meaningful research, education and innovation.

Our research programs include clinical research, big data analytics and basic/translational laboratory research. Our clinical research programs are supported by a large clinical research team located at Tampa General Hospital. The USF Tampa campus is home to the Division of Surgical Research, which is composed of the OnetoMap big data analytics group and multiple basic/translational research laboratories in the Morsani College of Medicine. Our basic/translational research laboratories are led by well-established principal investigators who currently hold multiple NIH and VA awards.

The rich research infrastructure of the Department of Surgery and our highly collaborative expert faculty with wide ranging expertise positions us well to perform true “bedside to bench to bedside” research. This allows us to identify significant healthcare problems on a population basis via advanced big data analytics, and to address critical surgical problems in the laboratory and in clinical studies. The faculty of the Department of Surgery is highly committed to train the next generation of clinician-scientists to perform clinically applicable and translational surgical research. Our research programs provide ample research training opportunities for residents, fellows and junior faculty.
