S.M.A.R.T. Professional Development
With an ongoing passion for sports safety, members of the SMART Institute strive to be active with professional development opportunities. The SMART Institute has taken part in and supported the following activities:
2007 Behind the Scenes as a Team Physician Course
The first ever of its kind, this course was designed to address the oftentimes all too sensitive topics associated with serving as a team physician, whether it be for a professional athletic team or a local high school. Ultimately, a team physician who understands the dynamics behind the scenes will be in a position to better serve the athletes. Click here to apply.

2008 Behind the Scenes as a Team Physician Course
The success of the inaugural course facilitated a second year of expert speakers gathering in Tampa, Florida to discuss the many challenging issues related to serving as a team physician. Once again, participants benefited from lectures and experiences shared by experienced and nationally recognized team physicians from around the country.

National Leader in Emergency Sports Care Partners with S.M.A.R.T
In July of 2007, the SMART Institute hosted Mike Cendoma from Sports Medicine Concepts. Mike is considered one of the leaders in sports medicine emergency procedures, in particular the management of acute head and spine injuries. The staff from Sports Medicine Concepts spent three days on the campus of USF and educated the certified athletic trainers of the SMART staff, as well as many community health care professionals including physicians, certified athletic trainers, emergency medical technicians, physical therapists, and nurses on the most current and safely performed sports medicine on field emergency procedures.
- SMART teamed with Sports Medicine Concepts to teach USF orthopaedic medical residents proper emergency care techniques for helmet, face mask, and football pad removal.
- SMART athletic trainers working with local high school football coaches in a coordinated effort to properly manage emergency circumstances
