The SMART Institute is proud to provide certified athletic trainers in the secondary school setting throughout Hillsborough County. These certified athletic trainers are responsible for the care and guidance of all high school athletes in the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports related injuries for all sports. In addition, these certified athletic trainers form the team that provides coverage and care for community athletic events.


Meet Our Team

Hillsborough High School
Bryan graduated from The University of North Florida in 2004 with a BS in Health and Athletic Training, and received his MS in Kinesiology/Athletic Training from Indiana University in 2006. Bryan moved to Tampa form Jacksonville in 2015 with his wife Shelley.

Alonso High School
Misty comes to us from Pendleton, IN where she graduated in 2004 with a BA in Athletic Training. In 2006 she received her MBA from Warner University. She went on to provide coverage for a high school in Indiana and was an Assistant Professor at Anderson University. She enjoys playing and watching sports, movies and outdoor activities and cheering on her Indiana teams.

Steinbrenner High School
Erica received her Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training (BSAT) from the University of South Florida in 2012. After completing her bachelors degree, she obtained her Masters of Science in Education (MSEd) from James Madison University in 2015. In her free time, Erica enjoys photography and traveling.

Freedom High School
Ian Graulich is a certified athletic trainer (ATC) at the USF Health Sports Medicine and Athletic Related Trauma (SMART) Institute, joining the department in 2007. As a member of the SMART Institute, Ian first served as the athletic trainer for Brandon High School, home of the 25-time State Champions in wrestling, from 2007-2011. He then served as the ATC for Freedom High School in the New Tampa area from 2011-2017. He currently manages the USF Health Concussion Center, where he sees patients as part of a comprehensive care team for patients with traumatic brain injury. 

Additionally, Ian is an active participant in the USF Athletic Training Education Program as a clinical site instructor, and provides classroom assistance to the faculty instructors. Ian has been involved with multiple department research initiatives including injury data analysis and objective concussion measurement tools. He has developed and implemented emergency action plans for numerous high schools, recreation facilities and sports complexes in the Tampa Bay area, while additionally serving on the Hillsborough County Public Schools Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. For his efforts, Ian was named the 2016 High School Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Athletic Trainers Association of Florida.

Gaither High School
Anna graduated from the University of North Florida in 2001 with a BS in Athletic Training and then went on to receive her MS in Sports Medicine from the University of Florida. Originally from Toronto, Canada, Anna has spent most of her life in Florida and loves watching sports, reading, running, spending time with family and going on adventures with her daughter.

Blake High School
Graduated in 2011 from West Virginia with a B.S. in Athletic Training and Sport Psychology where he played tennis. He is also a certified member of the United States Professional Tennis Association and a Kinesio Taping Practitioner. Prior to Tampa, his various athletic training settings included Cal Ripken training academy and USA Junior Hockey national teams. He competes in tennis and volleyball leagues when he can, enjoys playing and learning new sports, being outside when it's not storming, and buying best selling novels he never gets around to reading. Shane is currently working toward a Masters degree in Medical Sciences with a concentration in Athletic Training.

A.P. Leto High School
Grant graduated from West Chester University in 2014 with a BS in Athletic Training. He will be graduating in the spring of 2016 with a MS in Medical Sciences. Grant enjoys watching football and spending time with friends and family.

Tampa Bay Technical High School
Tyler graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a BS in Athletic Training. He is originally from York, Pennsylvania. Tyler enjoys golfing, fishing, and spending time with friends and family. He is currently working on his Masters degree in Medical Sciences with a concentration in Athletic Training.

Berkeley Preparatory School
Jordan graduated in 2012 from Florida Gulf Coast University with his BS in Athletic Training. He is currently working on his Masters degree is Medical Sciences, Athletic Training Concentration. A Florida native, he loves spending his free time at the beach, lifting weights, and watching football.

King High School
Francesca is originally from Montgomery, NY, and graduated in 2015 with a BS in Athletic Training from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. Francesca is also currently getting her Masters degree in medical science with a concentration in athletic training from the University of South Florida. While at Sacred Heart Francesca also played the flute in the marching band, pep band, and concert band. In her free time Francesca likes to catch up with friends, and spend time with family.

Berkeley Preparatory School
A native of Mount Vernon, Indiana, Alissa graduated from Purdue University with a BS in Health and Kinesiology: Athletic Training. She is currently working towards a Masters degree in Medical Sciences, Athletic Training Concentration from the University of South Florida.

USF Campus Recreation and Club Sports
Originally from Chesapeake, Virginia, Danielle graduated from George Mason University in 2012 with a BS in Athletic Training. She is currently working on her Masters degree in Medical Sciences, Athletic Training Concentration. In her spare time, she enjoys baking, traveling, and tubing.

Robinson High School
Sarah graduated in 2013 with a BS in Athletic Training from the University of South Florida. She then went on to earn her MBA from Kansas Wesleyan University in 2015. In her spare time she enjoys line dancing, cooking, playing lacrosse, and cuddling with her cat.

Carrollwood Day School
Originally from Long Island, NY, David graduated from King College in 2015 with a bachelors degree in Athletic Training. He is currently working on his Masters degree in Medical Sciences, Athletic Training Concentration. He likes to play soccer and exercise.
