Message from the Department Chair
Welcome to the Department of Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. We are delighted that you have chosen to explore the clinical, research and academic resources of our department. We are in a phase of dynamic and exciting growth - breaking the mold of a traditional academic orthopaedic department.
For starters, the USF Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program has an unprecedented level of collaboration - 8 hospitals and 40 surgeons. The program engages a constellation of top specialists and medical institutions for our students to learn in, including the world renowned Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. We are also very excited to have the USF Athletic Training Education Program (A.T.E.P.) within the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. It is one of a few programs nationwide to be anchored within a College of Medicine. It is also the first in the country to be anchored within a department combining orthopaedics and sports medicine. This is an extraordinary educational opportunity to connect, early on, student athletic trainers with the professionals they will engage during the rest of their careers. Our program also strengthns a key element of our sports medicine outreach efforts within the S.M.A.R.T Institute.
With the power of academic excellence comes great responsibility – one we do not take lightly. It’s at the heart of all we do - how we train our students to be the best in orthopedic surgery; how we provide patient care in musculoskeletal medicine; and the leadership role we’ve taken to transform sports medicine and sports safety statewide.
We are creating a learning environment that fosters creativity, collaboration and academic discovery – key ingredients that will serve students, patients and our specialty for decades to come.
