Biographical Sketch

Dr. Paul Shapshak received his BA from Harvard College (Biochemical Sciences), his PhD from Princeton University (Biochemical Sciences), and did a two-year fellowship at NIH ([NICHD] Molecular Biology). He joined the faculty at the University of South Florida in 2007 after spending 17 years at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. His areas of research include laboratory methods development, molecular virology, bioinformatics, NeuroAIDS, drug abuse, HIV evolution in the brain, HCV, and dementia. He received and participated in grants from NIH including NIDA, NIMH, NINDS, and NIGMS. He has international scientific interests and has had researchers at his laboratory from the USA, India, Japan, China, Venezuela, Columbia, Brazil, Cuba, Nicaragua, Russia, Czechoslovakia, and Sweden. Dr. Shapshak serves on NIDA and other NIH study sections (since 1989). He is on the Editorial Boards of several journals including AIDS, Biological Procedures On-line, Frontiers in Biosciences, and Bioinformation. He is a founding member of several scientific organizations including the College of Problems in Drug Dependence and American Society for Virology
