USF Health Students Heighten Public Awareness at the 2nd Annual Orthotics and Prosthetics Extremity Games

Physical Therapy and Medical students from the University of South Florida College of Medicine, under the direction of visiting assistant professor, M. Jason Highsmith, PT, DPT, CP, organized a booth for the Health Expo held as part of the 2nd Annual Orthotics & Prosthetics (O&P) Extremity Games on Thursday, July 19, 2007 in Orlando, Florida. Booth participants had the opportunity to test their knowledge by taking one or both of two quizzes; one on general health topics and one on select O&P topics. The actual athletic competitions, which included kayaking, rock climbing, skateboarding, wakeboarding, surfing and BMX biking. Among the most frequently discussed topics at the USF booth was the USF Kayak Hand developed by Dr Jason Highsmith. Five kayak hands were given to war wounded soldiers and coaches affiliated with the kayak program.  Provision of these devices was made possible by funding from both USF’s current $1M Federal Prosthetics & Orthotics Demonstration Project and by the Florida Physical Therapy Association’s Linda Crane Research Grant.
“Obviously, last years event was a success as this was the 2nd annual O&P Extremity Games.  We were proud to support the O&P Games and College Park’s efforts with both student/faculty support but also by giving back to the amputee athletic community with a product to encourage participation by a larger group of these remarkable individuals.” said Dr. Highsmith.
