Find A Journal Article FAQ
Shimberg Health Sciences Library · F.A.Q.

How do I find a journal article?

1.  Decide on the subject for which you want to locate articles:

Be specific to get the most relevant results, for example, “low back pain” not “pain”.
Contact a Reference Librarian at 813-974-2288 for assistance if needed.

2.  Choose a Database appropriate for your subject:

The PubMed and CINAHL databases contain medical, nursing, and public health journal article citations.  These and other databases are available from the Shimberg Library and USF Libraries web pages.

Important:  Refer to instructions on how to Connect From Home if you are working off campus.  See ID’s & Accounts Needed for a list of electronic resources requiring an HSCNET account.

3.  Search the Database for articles on your subject:

Most databases have Help buttons or Tutorial links for assistance.  The Shimberg Library also offers free training classes

Some databases allow you to limit your search to peer-reviewed articles.

Some databases may already have a link to the full text of the article you require.  Look for a full text, PDF, or HTML link to view the full copy of the article online.  If available, use the [SFX] button to check the USF Libraries Electronic Journals collection.

4.  Search USF Libraries for the Journal in Print or Electronic format:

For Print: Go to the Library Catalog to search for the title of the journal (not the title of the article!).  Notice the name of the USF Library in your search results.  The Shimberg Library is listed as SHIMBERG HEALTH SCIENCES.  Click on the “Location” link to verify the Library has the year, volume and issue you need.  The print journals and photocopiers are located on the 2nd floor of the Shimberg Library. If your search result displays a URL link to the online resource, click on it to access the electronic copy.  Refer to How to Find a Book or Journal FAQ for more detailed instructions on using the Catalog.

For Electronic Journals:  The Library Catalog may display a URL link to the online journal.  If not, go to EJournals at the USF Libraries home page and search for the title of the journal.

5.  Locate the article:

If USF does not have the journal you need in print or electronic format, you may request an Interlibrary Loan for journals not owned by the USF Libraries.  Plan ahead, because it takes time to obtain the article through Interlibrary Loan.
