How can I make a donation to the Library?

The Hinks and Elaine Shimberg Health Sciences Library (SHSL) at the University of South Florida supports the instructional and research activities of the College of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Public Health, and the School of Physical Therapy. The spiraling costs of books, journals and databases, and the need for state-of-the-art technology are challenges to our ability to meet the needs of the Health Sciences Center with available budgets. Gifts greatly assist us in maintaining and strengthening our collection. The SHSL welcomes both financial and gifts-in-kind donations.

Financial Gifts to support Library resources are always welcome and no gift is considered too small. Financial donations may be made as a general gift or the Library will purchase appropriate materials after discussion with the donor. All monetary gifts are eligible for a tax receipt and can be made by check or money order.

Memorial and Honorary Gifts can be made to honor or memorialize a friend or loved one. The donor will receive an acknowledgment letter. A letter of condolence recognizing the donor's gift will also be sent to the family. A memorial gift may be monetary or a needed, recently published book. A bookplate will be affixed to permanently dedicate each book as the donor wishes.

Special Occasions, such as holidays, graduations, birthdays, bar/bat mitzvahs, anniversaries, or retirements, may be celebrated by financial or gifts-in-kind donations. The donor will receive an acknowledgment letter, and a letter recognizing your gift will be sent to the honoree. A gift bookplate will commemorate all purchases from the donation.

Gifts-in-Kind. The Library accepts gift books, journals, and special collection materials. Books published within the past five years are welcome. Donors are asked to deliver the materials to the Library and fill out a Donation Form. The Library Director will acknowledge all gifts with a personal letter. Please call 813-974-2399 in advance to confirm that your donation meets the scope of our collection. If not, we will refer you to a list of institutions and agencies that accept library donations: Donation Programs for Books, Journals and Media.*

In compliance with IRS rules, the Library does not evaluate or appraise books for tax purposes. Reproductions or photocopies of copyrighted works will not be accepted unless evidence of compliance with the copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code) and its prevailing interpretations are provided.

New Books authored or edited by USF Health Sciences Center faculty are always a welcome addition to our collection.

Other Ways of Giving. University of South Florida faculty and staff may designate the Shimberg Health Sciences Library as a beneficiary when they make their annual contribution to the Faculty Staff Campaign.
