Library Services for USF Health's Distance Learners

USF ID Card

Without this card you have limited library privileges

  • Your USF ID card is your library card. The 14-digit barcode number beginning with a '205' is your library ID number.
  • To get your USF Library Card (your USF ID card), apply online
  • The 14-digit number on your Library card is required to obtain a NetID account, which provides access to the USF portal, myUSF, which is for students taking courses using Blackboard. The next section will provide instruction on acquiring a NetID Account
  • Your card is valid at all State University System and Florida Community College libraries
  • Please contact USF Card Coordinator Delma Rodriguez at (813) 974-2339 with questions.

HSC Computer Account

  • In order to have access to some Shimberg Health Sciences Library resources, you must be affiliated with the Health Sciences Center as faculty, staff or student, and have a HSC e-mail account. HSC individuals must apply for an account through HSC Information Services or call 813-974-6288.
  • Once at HSC Information Services, go to new accounts and follow the on-screen directions
  • When finished, you will receive two sets of numbers: a Service Number and an Access code. SAVE THESE!!!

Though the HSC e-mail and HSCnet accounts are completely different accounts, and in no way associated with the USF NetID account (next section), you should also attempt to utilize the same log-on ID and password when you acquire the USF NetID account, less to keep track of...

Your HSC e-mail account log-on ID and password are needed to access some HSC Library Resources.

USF NetID Account

To access your Blackboard Course Site, you'll need a USF NetID.

  • The first step is getting a USF ID Card, for the 14 digit number beginning with a '205'.
  • Once you have the 14 digit USF ID Card number, go to University Network Access.
  • Once at the site, click on the text that says: Are you a new user? Sign up! and follow the on-screen directions
  • Before you leave, change your official e-mail address.
  • Click Edit NetID Options
  • Under Change your Official E-mail Address OPTIONAL, go to the drop down box, click your  @hsc.usf.edu address, then click OK (allows you to access HSC resources sent to your e-mail address)

When accessing myUSF from now on, you can log right on with the NetID and password.

USF Libraries

Through the USF Libraries resources, distance learners can use many of the same services and resources available to on-campus students. The USF Libraries provide access to numerous electronic resources, including:

USF Libraries pay to subscribe to many of these online services and they are available only to students, faculty, and staff with a USF Library ID number.

Obtain Books and Articles

(*Sarasota nursing students - see red notations*)

As a Health Sciences student you can use the Interlibrary loan (ILL) services provided by the Shimberg Library. You can submit an ILL request online by filling out the Photocopy/ILL form.

There may be fees associated with some ILL services (over 20 per week, or 100 per term) from the HSC Shimberg Library. ILL materials take time to process and deliver. Allow for this time in your planning. Please contact Shimberg Library ILL department if you have any questions at (813)-974-2123.

A book owned by Shimberg Library or one of the other USF Libraries:
Can be mailed directly to your home. You are responsible for the return postage.

If you are a Sarasota Nursing student,
you may order it from another USF Library or from a non-USF library through interlibrary loan using the ILLiad system. There is no charge for ordering books. Books must be picked up at the Jane Bancroft Cook Library in Sarasota.

A book NOT owned by any USF Library:
Can be borrowed from another library through ILL, but must be picked up at the Shimberg Library. Therefore, you might consider making your loan request through your nearest public or State University System library.

An article from a periodical owned by any USF Library, including Shimberg:
Can be mailed or faxed to you at no charge. This article does not have to be returned.

An article from a periodical NOT owned by any USF Library:
Can be obtained through ILL and can be mailed, faxed or e-mailed to you. There may be charges associated with this.

If you are a Sarasota Nursing student, you may order it from another USF Library or from a non-USF library through interlibrary loan (ILL) using this Shimberg Library Order Form. The article does not have to be returned.
